In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was President. The Gold Rush had just finished pumping the streets of San Francisco with both people and money. San Francisco was just starting to grow into a proper city, with a mere 60,000 residents.
New settlers poured into the City. And many of them gathered at The Oakdale Bar & Clam House (The Old Clam House) at 299 Bayshore Boulevard.
The establishment was so popular it was connected to downtown San Francisco by a two-mile long plank road. And as the name ‘Bayshore Boulevard’ suggests, in 1861, it sat on what was then the waterfront to the south of Islais Creek.
In 1906 the restaurant was spared from a fire during the Great Earthquake – allowing it the distinction to be San Francisco’s oldest restaurant in the same location since 1861.
For 160 years, they’ve been serving calms, beers and seafood in the same location, just below Bernal Heights. Now it’s looking for a new owner.
