Understaffed restaurants are turning to technology to help them survive the employee “Turnover Tsnumi” that, like the pandemic, has plagued the restaurant and hospitality industries. The restaurant hiring crisis has seen a record numbers of service workers quit their jobs in demand of better working conditions, benefits and pay – and as a result, digital ordering systems are booming.
Digital kiosk like GRUBBRR’s are dramatically helping restaurants that have been hit hard by staffing issues because they’re cheaper to deploy and easier to mange than humans. “The cashier is obsolete.” Sam Zietz is the CEO of GRUBBRR, the company that makes the digital kiosks. There is only solution to the labor shortage says Zietz, “and that’s automation.”
The digital ordering kiosk, with large touch-screens, allow restaurants to let the customer help themselves – to place and pay for an order in store – without the help of a cashier or server. Guess what, it’s actually an operational improvement that is helping restaurants’ bottom line.
GRUBBRR’s kiosks cost around $2,500, pair that with the $200 a month fee for the software, and a restaurant could save around $6,000 a month on labor costs.
Bigger Orders, Bigger Profits
Zietz says on average, customers spend around 12 – 22% more on an order placed at a digital kiosk. One GRUBBRR restaurant customer that deployed the system found customer checks also rose from $13 to $20 on average.
Why the increase? Personalization. The kiosk does a better job of upselling and encouraging customer add-ons than their human counterparts. Reward programs can also be tied directly to the kiosk so customers get personal recommendations when they return (based on previous orders).
When not in use, the digital kiosk can default to “attract mode,” just like old-school arcade games, to showcase the daily special, or recommend a hot coffee or warm scone on a cold winter day.
Large orders, that a customer may be embarrassed to request from a human cashier, get ordered more often, too. And since it’s all digital, it’s easy for the operator to quickly update pricing, revise offerings (due to supply chain issues) or available ingredients.
